"Copy That, Good Buddy" by Dan Adkins

We recently mentioned Dan's wondrous ability to create some great art by copy'n some great art, but I thought it was really cool that the guy who encouraged him most, Wally Wood, was the guy he copied best.  The Maze! was Adkins own creation, soooo....about a decade later, The Cap'n copied Dan Adkins

  1. I had a feeling you were an artist...nice work, Cap.
I was never as down on Adkins as some, partly because his art was so beautifully crafted. As you say, Wood was a habitual swipe artist, but his sources went back to the beginnings of illustration and Adkins' file was full of recent, easily traced down stuff. Plus, Wood had such a strong style, that whatever he lifted looked more like him than the source.

    1. I wasnae a big fan, but I was never down on Adkins, either. Sometimes amazed how vicious the fanzine voices could be, especially consider'n the big rock throwers lived in glass abodes

  2. As Adkins once said in his defense -- correctly -- everyone swiped. His mistake was in the pieces he swiped from -- too prominent.
And regardless, I enjoyed his work.,

    1. Yeah, beautiful stuff. If I recall correctly, Kirby had to tell others that The Demon look was swiped from Hal Foster
