He did some of his most interesting work on the fringes of publishing. Did you ever see The Champion, begun by Gene, finished by Dan Day when the former died? An edited version ran in Epic, then was published in full a few years later by Special Studio. Script by Moench, it's a crazy occult knight in armor story. Predating Aztec Ace, it looks like really good fanzine art.
Havenae seen The Champion (I think), but I'll have to check it out. Totally agree about the fringes, some of his fanzine and Orbit stuff just blows me away
