Only new image on here is the first one. Had a strange debate at the mailbox tonight with a neighbor I hardly know who lives two blocks away (I will say no one goes as all-out on Halloween'n the front yard as he). He claims Conan doesn't hold a candle to the great REH character Cormac Mac Art. I said I'll read it and get back

Your neighbor would be incorrect. The Cormac stories aren't better, simply different. It depends on what a person is in the mood to read. Hyboreans or Vikings. Both characters are a great read. The Halloween enthusiast might be rooting for the underdog, since the Cormac stories are tragically overshadowed by Mr. Howards other characters.
ReplyDeleteAs always, THANK YOU for your amazing posts!!!
Hubba-bubba, no trouble, and thanks for some insightful comments on Cormac. Denver has the most amaz'n old PB and old LP store ever (Black and Read), and I'm excited to go sometime and get sump'n sump'n Mac Art
DeleteOne final note on the Cormac Mac Art topic.
ReplyDeleteThe character was one of Mr. Howard’s less developed characters. Only a small handful of stories and fragments were written. If I may HUMBLY offer a bit of limited insight to inform your proposed quest? My first exposure to the ‘rogue Gael’ was a paperback purchased back in the wonderous early 70’s.
“Tigers of the Sea” a limited edition paperback published by Zebra Books.
This beauty features a Jeff Jones wrap around cover, with five beautiful /horribly reproduced inside illustrations by Tim Kirk. Rereading this one brings back the magic of the days when Vikings had horned helmets and dinosaur tails dragged on the ground. My little library also contains six other Cormac titles from Zebra books. All of these were written by Andrew Offutt and were an ongoing story arc. Definitely NOT Howard’s work …but readable. These also feature a couple more Jones covers and a Ken Kelly or two. Certainly, there are more recent reprints and compilations available, but my conscience demanded that you be made aware of the 1970’s coolness that is readily grab-able on ebay.
Anyway, Crom be with you on your quest and THANK YOU for continuously curating coolness!!!
Wow, thanks so much! Sounds like Tigers of the Sea is the PB for me, and what a co-inky-dink with your final comment, cause "continuously curating coolness " was what I've always been shoot'n for! 'Preciate ya big time
