Gosh, but I love early Barry Smith. His Kirby-inspired Daredevil is amazing. I remember originally being both repulsed and attracted to his young style. Now I just flat-out love it. Keep up these great posts.
Thanks!!! Yeah, Barry's early stuff is a delightful taste that I have now embraced--I had to go back recently and re-acquire the Daredevil/Black Panther team-up, and the Blastaar issue of X-men, and they are now some of my most prized possessions
So in that Adams Conan pic, seems as if the only way he knows how to get his boots off is to use a knife. Or maybe he cuts himself to feed his pet bats there.
I agree on the DD/Panther comics, inked by Johnny Craig, I think. Those silent skyscraper panels of the Panther with searchlights were pretty exciting at the time, and you can still feel the high energy when you look at them.

Oh, yeah!! I feel some nostalgic wonderment com'n on
ReplyDeleteI had those books you gentlemen mention and I share your reaction to them. I recall a SHIELD issue, too.
ReplyDeleteThe SHIELD by Smith is a truly incredible comic. The only copy in my neck of the woods is near mint and expensive, but I'm sav'n my sheckels
DeleteAnd of course, his early Avengers work. Man, I gotta fire up some cash and repurchase those books.
