Arena Half-Splash by Al Williamson

Just call me buttah, cause I'm on a roll!  Last post was a splash from Weird Science #17, and here we see the original publication (first image) as you opened Valor #1,another great series from EC

  1. I nominate the splash to "Food for Thought"

    1. That's a beauty. Thought I had it up already, but the fundundant blog will put it up, irregardless (think I mentioned it, but in my youth, I single-handedly got irregardless added to Webster's--when you look it up now, the definition says "see regardless")

    2. You're right. Not only did you post it, but I was there in the comments. So never mind. I'll try to come up with something better...

    3. Hah! I'm right there with you on the memory things (fun but redundant). At work, I tell co-workers I've forgotten more than they'll ever know about the job. Did take a look at that post from four years ago, and although it's the most amaz'n splash, I cannae come up with anything additional, anyway. Preciate you planning to shoot me some other ideas on EC splashes. Did you talk to Wrightson about his collection? My understanding was his most treasured collectibles were the ECs

    4. At the time, Wrightson was working with Christopher Zavisa (Christopher Enterprises) on the soon-to-be-released A Look Back. Zavisa had sent him a copy of Alex Nino's Satan Tears that he'd published and I think that's the only non-Wrightson work we looked at.( I ended up getting both books eventually). We were only visiting for a day and I guess there were too many new projects and new art to engage us, plus just learning a little about how he worked. From interviews and such, I think you're right about Wrightson's attachment to EC, though. I had a friend who had some original 50's editions and I just really love the look of that era of comics: letterpress, metal plates, newsprint...who knows what the alchemy was?

    5. So cool of you to share, but yeah, I think I am flashing on some fanzine interviews from the early 70s, long before A look Back
