A Conan Mystery by Barry Smith
This is a panel from Orpheus #1, a fanzine of the early seventies. Conan is wearing his original bling as a young thief, and has lost the corny helmet ala Conan #6, so the time frame is 1970-1971 Conan #6-16, but here's my quandry. I've scoured everything and cannae find this scene. Amid a hail of arrows, Conan has taken one in the ribs....what is this is? Call'n all Conanophiles

Since the panel has the 'zip-a-tone' background, maybe it's an outtake from a B&W story. But the only one that fits is the one printed in Conan 12 - but then properly in Savage Tales 4 - and it doesn't work. Do'h!
ReplyDeleteI know, right? The only story that sorta worked was Conan #10, but it's not there
ReplyDeleteI'm stumped. I've got to agree with Helen that it must be an "outtake." Barry did only so much black and white work back then. And his style transition are so obvious, making it easy to identify his growth and specific issues.
ReplyDeleteFinally! Everyone agrees on something--nobody knows what this is--to support my idea of an outtake in #10---maybe Conan himself was meant to be wounded in the roof-top pursuit-instead of the casanova that got published. It would certainly help explain how only a dozen soldiers could capture the Cimmerian the following ish. Helen's point about zip-a-tone is still the fly in my soup, though....
