Touch Of Skywald by Mike Kaluta

Finally remembered that Russ had told me (more than once!) that Kaluta had done work for Skywald's horror mags, and that it was more along the lines of  fanzine stuff.  Way cool!  Also learned that Kaluta did a back-up story for Superman (?), and I stuck up this splash because it is also from 1971, and the time machine reminds me of the tech in The Cosmos Strain (don't bother search'n that story title, by the by, cause all you'll find is potent pot), but most importantly--isn't that Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder 6 years before the movie?  George was definitely well-read back then

  1. I think he had a story in that big Superman 400 too. As for magazine/fanzine hybrids, I guess there were deadline problems on Marvel's Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction, because editor (and Longtime fan) Roy Thomas ransacked the fanzines to fill pages on the first few issues. Kaluta, Brunner, Bruce Jones, Williamson, even Neal Adams, were all reprinted from Abyss, Witzend, Phase, etc.

    1. You mention two books I actually held onto! Yes, Kaluta has a great story in Superman 400 (course, it's 13 years after the other 2 here). And yes, UWOSF #4 is onea my all-time fav mags, and it feels just like a great fanzine. Even a coupla pages by Bob Kline, and a Corben story from the fanzine Anomaly
