Superman by Clyde Caldwell

I said it 53 years ago (I know it's dated 72, but I didn't see it until 1973, in TBG #40), and I'll say it again, this is weird, but che wunnerful.  Dated the same year as my fav Clyde (Conan, on here in the wayback), this shares that rich, decadent strangeness that I like to call fanzine Caldwell

  1. Well, that is damned peculiar. I was involved in a pretty crappy little fanzine at about the same time and we ran an ad in TBG, which resulted in a sample from Caldwell that looked considerably more advanced than this piece, very much in the vein of his sword and sorcery art, with lots of ornamentation. It was the first I'd ever heard of him and the only reason we didn't use him is that he expected to be paid for his work. We were just a bunch of young broke assholes, and I forgot all about him until I saw his work appearing in some of the slicker Howard zines a little later. It's hard to realize that this chunky Superman came from the same hand.

    1. Wowsers, another amazeballs comment (at least for this fanzine fanboy)! Hope you guys at least kept Clyde's sample. Yeah, he did a plethora in the Howard zines, and I really dug his contents page illo for the Omni magazines when they came along in 78. Dunno why, but I never picked up the scent on all his paintings. They're awesome, but somehow just not my cupa
