The Spirit On The Moon (Not) by Wally Wood

That title reads kinda funny, so let me start by say'n that Wally Wood indeed drew this, but it's not The Outer Space Spirit (1952) that I thought it was when I first saw it.  The first image is from a 1967 comic art catalog, and it's offering up a 1955 page from Mad Magazine.  Ohmyheck.  Saw it cause 1967 Berni Wrightson led to so much great stuff, I thought I'd add 1967 to the other usual suspects' names and see what popped up.  I have six or seven grandkids who are STILL all about doing that balancing scales hand gesture whenever "six seven" is mentioned

  1. I have a beat-up old copy of Mad for Keeps, the first Mad hardback, from 1958, with this story, ten whole pages of primo Wood. Mad was good for a long time, but those early years were just supernaturally beautiful.
And Wood kept going back to the Moon up until NASA arrived and a bit thereafter. I think he sent Dynamo up there at least twice.

    1. Yep, and let's not forget Doc Doom on the Moon (sorta). Wow, Mad for Keeps hardbound sounds awesome, and I dig the double entende title. Yeah, the whole "Is A Trip To The Moon Possible?" story is a beaut, but the panel I chose really had me doing a wunnerful double take, and dig'n out my Outer Space Spirit just to verify my sanity (but hey, very apropro that we mention Mad when verifying my sanity)
