Coupla Unicorns by Barry Smith

  1. Those Ka-Zar tales are hidden gems. I especially like the Everett inks on one of them. Even the Trimpe stories afterwards seem inspired.

    1. Couldnae agree more. The first six issues of Astonishing Tales has always been a keeper for me (which says a lot, since the ebb and flow of my collection rarely exceeds 500 comics, and I've devoted way too much energy try'n to condense it to some magical "prime")

    2. Just forgot to ask-have you read Savage Tales #1 Featuring Ka-zar? This black 'n white mag had three of Barry's stories in a beautiful wash

    3. The original? I used to have it. I don't recall wash on the Smith issues, just Frost Giant's Daughter and Red Nails. Ka-Zar was a Buscema self-inked story that seemed deliberately gratuitous with lots of nude women. Smith's planned piece for the original #2 (there was a hiatus after #1) showed up in mildly censored form in Conan #12, and Buscema's Ka-Zar for ST #2 was used for Astonshing Tales #9. Also a Neal Adams Man-Thing meant for ST was moved to Astonishing Tales #12. Now if you'll excuse me, the nurses are here for my shock treatment.

    4. Oh, wait. You mean the reprinted Ka-Zar stories. Savage Tales Annual, right? I totally forgot about that. I used to have most of the Marvel Magazines, but, you know how it goes.
