Some Steve Ditko

8 comments:

  1. He literally put two pages worth of content on one page on those great b&w magazine strips. The Strange Tales mock-up is fantastic. I especially love the corner box, Stephen Strange as a trench-coated fugitive in one of the greatest serials of all time. Thanks, Cap.

  2. Strange on the run was definitely onea the all-time great story arcs, but did you catch the non-Ditko in all this? I felt sure that would elicit some comments, but so far---nada

  3. Got right past me. Who is that, Robert Kline?

I forgot to ask if you've seen these:

    1. Thanks, Russ! Cool concept, I especially dig the pin-up re-worked as a cover. Not Robert Kline (even his earliest stuff was 3 years later), but I have no idea who it is, just enjoyed it and thought it looked kinda like Ditko

  4. According to Pappy's Golden Age Blog, that Fantasy Illustrated cover is by a guy named Landon Chesney (I never heard of him before either). Ditko actually drew a story for the first issue of a completely different book also called Fantasy Illustrated in 1982, but he didn't do the cover for that one either.

  6. Cheney was an eloquent critic as well as a top fan artist, who seemed inspired by Harvey Kurtzman, especially in his humor strips. His most widely-circulated story was probably in a full-color underground comic called Weird Fantasies that I got for the Richard Corben story. Cheney contributed the cover as well as a story reprinted from fanzines called "The Life Battery". This time the art seemed heavily influenced by Johnny Craig, another of EC fan Cheney's favorites. Great stuff. Thanks to Wayne for the catch.

    And Happy New Year, Cap'n.
