Space Detective by Wally Wood

Long before zip-loc, Wally had created gallon-sized bags, and only the hero needed them

  1. Much as I love Wood's EC work (especially the halftone glories of Mad Magazine), these Avon-era covers achieved an ideal for me of what comics should look like. Space Detective, Rocket to the Moon, Strange Worlds, Eerie, and (my favorite) Dr. Fu Manchu. Just magnificent.

  3. Captain Science is pretty cool too, even if it's not Avon. though I guess you got me, Cap ! Another non-Avon with great covers from this period is Dark Mysteries, which also had a Wood-designed logo, I think. He was so prolific at this point in his career, and just seemed to get better each year through the entire fifties. I came too late to catch these on the drugstore racks, but it must've been great for the kids who did.

  4. My bad on the publisher! I like the way you said it initially, "Avon-era" Yeah, the leather-winged dude on Dark Mysteries has been up on here before, and Doc Fu Manchu. I'm especially enamored with those black'n white inside front covers Wood would often deigned to bestow. Yeah, I'm feeling a monster post brewing of all that pre-EC Wally Wood
