Triceratops Rider by Roy Krenkel

Not entirely sure why, but I am totally mesmerized by this sketch.  The idea that someone could hunt by riding a T top and using a longbow is nothing short of delightful.  If we think of Rhinos as their descendants, and knowing that Rhinos can gallup somewhere just above 30 MPH, it makes perfect sense.  I do have a big ask about this rough (think it was Pee Wee Herman who wondered why people always have a big ask):  did Roy ever do a more finished illo of this?  If you know of sump'n sump'n, please holla

Psychon's Psweet Ride by Jack Kirby

The published panel was in the comic that tied with New Gods #7 for the greatest comic ever (in Cap'n's mind)-Fantastic Four King-Size Special! #5, so the pencils are a moot point this time, as Joe Sinnott also ties Mike Royer for greatest Kirby inker ever.  But the pencils are still wondrous to me.  Love how Kirby says what's happen'n in a five-word note that detracts not one bit from the art.  Other notes in the original art call this new baddie Psychon, instead of the published Psycho-Man.  Either way, it's better than Master of Emotions

Nick Fury by Gil Kane

Bite'n my tongue here, so let me just say Kane did an amaze'n Fury that I never saw, and too many chefs spoil the soup

Squa Tront Mail'n Envelope by Kenneth Smith

My last post, New Cover by Wally Wood (which was apropro dated April Fool's day, as it ain't a new cover) led to Russ providing, right there in his  comments, all of Squa Tront in all it's splendor to all of us (and that's not all-it's triple all!).  Now, I find out Squa Tront was originally mailed out to folks in illustrated envelopes!  Who knew? Not I, as I obtained #3 and #4 way after the fact.  This Kenneth Smith one is for issue #4 (I think), and if you seek Kenneth in the wayback, you know how much I dig him.  I'd be remiss to leave out the first time I knew of him, the cover of Phantasmagoria #1.  Fanzine on fanzine on and on, sooooo cool

New Cover by Wally Wood

Yeah, yeah, just new to me, but I'm glad I finally saw it!  They used onea the panels from my favorite Wally Wood story, the unpublished The Spawn of Venus.  Turns out it may be everybody's fav, judg'n by the thousands of views my waywayback post has gotten.  Loved it so much, I posted the entire story in three formats

Pencil Me In For Makkalet! by Barry Smith

I was so fired up for some new Barry Smith when Conan #19 came out, I rushed home, plopped on my basement bed with it, and just stared.  Dunno if I started to read it, but I definitely started to devour it panel by panel, and this top panel on page 15 freaked me out, and not in a good way.  I acourse had not even looked for or seen the letters page, which explained they had run out of time to submit to the printers, and Dan Adkins couldn't ink the rest of the issue from here on (could the incredible detail of this panel made it the stop'n point? hhhmmmm....)

Genocide Spray! by Jack Kirby

Onea my favorite things about da blog is when I can put up two or three versions of the same picture

Comicon Coke by Larry Todd

I can't remember last week, but just look'n at it, I think this was part of a page in The Buyer's Guide For Comic Fandom.  Wonderful illo that harkens back to a lota Todd's other aliens (#Moby Gleep #Broken Sparrow), but why did this one illo take three years to draw?  Among a bazillion other things, I woulda loved to chat with him about that

New Frank Frazetta!

Yeah, yeah, just new to me.  The actual paperback for Tarzan And The Lion Man has been in my stacks since I was just a pup, and the pencils were in a local adzine back when I was lion about my age (college), but I never imagined there was this che great rough.  Maybe just me, but Tarzan looks much better in the rough

A Hole In The Wall by Roy Krenkel

Another what is this is for the Cap'n.  25 years ago (March, 2001) I printed this offa Monster's tradeart site.  It probly even told what it is for/from, but I see it in my binders every onceina, and wonder.  If you know, shoot me a comment, please
Never mind!  This got me look'n for the elusive Scarlet Citadel Roy was working on at his passing, and I saw this as parta Sowers Of Thunder (more later)

Long Ago And Yet To Come by George Metzger

Here's another great picture from the comic that gets my nomination for the longest title:  Airships of Atlantis Discover...Mu The Land That Never Was (Or Was It?)  Actually, the "or was it?" part is just in my head, but it's still a REALLY long title.  Now, if future history serves me correctly, I believe Atlantis was/will be an island nation just west of the mediterranean, and Mu was/will be an island nation just east of present day Hong Kong.  Interesting thing about directions:  if you're travel'n east, you will always be going east, and going west, you're always going west, but if you travel north or south, eventually you'll be going in the opposite direction.  Things that make you go hhhmmmmm...

Watercolors For A Buck by Frank Frazetta!

Yeah, yeah, new book that's just new to me, from near the begin'n of the century, and then another coupla takes on the image Fritz may have gone most fundundant on with his watercolor passion.  Even on here, there's bunches more of his vary'n watercolors applied to this unused (!) Buck Rogers cover, so I'm just wonder'n how many total there are, and have they been collected in a tome?  If you know sump'n sump'n, please holla

Conan #24 Cover by Barry Smith

Jump back, Jack!  The pen 'n ink and the Dean White colors are as big as ya wanna (#please embiggen), and then, there's my copy, complete with some kinda food or drink or oil stain.  Yes, I've been known to snack while work'n on a car

Before There Was Star Hawks by Gil Kane

About a decade before Star Hawks, Kane did this Cap'n America, and gave Cap an amazeballs ride that woulda fit smoothly into Star Hawks (maybe THAT shoulda been his name in the Marvel credits-Gil "Smooth" Kane)

New Cover by Jack Kirby!

Yeah, yeah, just new to me, but my favorite part about doing a new cover with it mainly the cover of Fantastic Four #72-it looks just like the vintage cover itself, even the colors.  I also dig the recent comics on the spinner racks, like Conan #1 and Swamp Thing #1, for the same reason.  Retro is the way to go!  (I feel like I think and sound like Big Bear sometimes, but luvit)

Sherlock Holmes by Jim Steranko

After examining all the pertinent evidence gleaned over the past 16 years (#I typed in Sherlock in my search box), one is led to the inevitable conclusion that I've never posted the pencils to this iconic image.  From this, one can deduce who this mystery Cap'n is.  He's obviously the old gent standing on the corner who, when asked how to get to the local famous restaurant by a visitor, always pauses for a moment, and then says, "from here?"  Yep, that's me

The Thing Of The Swamp by Berni Wrightson

Me gusta mucho, but I guess technically, this should be The Thing Of The Marsh

Always Bet Green by Steve Ditko

The ancient (1965) fanzine cover to all stars! is che great, but I love the fully colored version I found on a Spanish blog.  If you know who colored it, please holla.  We've only mentioned 2 or 3 colorists on here, and I am always indebted to some cool shades.  Shoulda said the roulette phrase always bet red, like the original monochrome cover, but the new colors look cool on the dino, too, and I actually do always bet green on roulette.  Course, I go home broke like everybody else, but it's fun while it lasts
