Rue the Day We Got Poe-etick by Berni Wrightson
Murders At The Rue Morgue is onea Berni's all-time classics. What's troubling to me is how little I care for the rest of the Edgar Allen Poe Portfolio that Wrightson obviously did with such loving care (I've included part of the only other painting in the portfolio I vaguely cared for--an illustration of how disastrous a burp can be in a social setting), but, yeah, the rest are just not my cupa tea. I am very appreciative of Poe-- his genius in creating the creative detective obviously led to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Stout's Nero Wolfe, two pillars of my reading life. First image is the original painting, then several prints from the portfolio. Embiggen and marvel at Berni's gifts

It might be the medium of oils, which didn't seem as appropriate for Wrightson's cartoonish approach. Watercolors almost made his stuff looked like animation cels.I think the Apparitions portfolio utilized markers (check out the ship in the background of that outer space scene).
ReplyDeleteTrue dat. The outer space plate from Apparitions is truly great, maybe my fav Wrightson
