The original cover to Blue Ribbon Comics #5 and then the published cover. Apparently, Mike Royer and Joe Sinnott took an extended fishing trip without even thinking what kinda impact it would have on the rest of us! Very selfish, guys! (Don't get me wrong, I love Rick Buckler's Deathlok and his amazing fanzine work--I just don't think he was a good fit to ink Kirby, but I'm very picky, and don't think a lot of inkers are a good fit)
I actually think Dick Ayers ( I met him) was the best Kirby inker, he humanized his figures. Sinnot is a close second but still he made them look flatter, more two dimensional. Just my opnion
ReplyDeleteAyers was great on Kirby, especially on some of the monster stuff. I thought Chic Stone was pretty right on, too
ReplyDeletemy Cap'n my Cap'n... while I share your love of Joe and Mike, Buckler's a nice change of pace; considering how muck Kirbyesque stuff he was actually assigned to do over the years... but I do get your minor (very minor indeed) gripe. Thanks as ever for the generosity of this blog.
